Looking for a new ‘do? Hairstylist Christiano Tobar always has his finger on the pulse. Here are his picks for the biggest trends of the year!
Those who prefer a more mature and ‘done’ look will love this trend. Think geometric Vidal Sassoon-style cuts like sharp pixies and bobs. A great example is Ryerson University fashion advisor Heidi Ruggier (top photo). She wears a cool solid black bowl cut with red lips and it looks gorgeous. A sharp cut is already clean and tidy. For a more approachable version, I recommend pairing it with natural highlights or solid colours. Crazy bright colours are very high fashion and a lot less wearable day to day.
Balayage has been around for a few years now and, to be honest, us creative hair-world types are getting a little bit tired of it! We’re going to be seeing less of the subtle look and way more bold colours. One big colouring trend is pixels in the hair. It’s complicated to achieve but beautiful! Instead of painting on colour using a feathering method, it’s applied really precisely to create a pixelated image on the hair.
Again, this isn’t for everyone so for 2019 think about getting highlights instead. Highlights are the new Balayage and, beautifully done, are stunning! I also think women like how they can look pristine and gorgeous even after some grow out.
Very natural, undone looks are huge right now. I call this the haircut that looks like you haven’t had a haircut! Some influencers like blogger Taylor LaShae are foregoing professional cuts entirely, creating bobs and bowl cuts by putting on a hat and cutting around it themselves. This approach isn’t for everyone, of course! The trend this year is really just a wear-and-go style that looks like you’ve been at the beach all day. To achieve this look you’ll want to air dry your hair and use very little product. The result is both messy and sexy at once.
Glam 90’s supermodel hair is a growing trend this year. The same week that 90’s celebrity stylist Oribe passed away (he did all the big name models), I had two clients come in asking for big Cindy Crawford hair! It’s edgy and not for the average person but also really sexy and totally achievable, if you have the time.
The easiest way to get the look is to blow dry your hair taking out 90% of the moisture. Blow it all forward, blow it back, and boom, you’ll have volume. You can then add curl with a wand. Big rollers are also an option. There are a ton of YouTube tutorials online (like this great one by Sarah Angius) showing how to get this look yourself using techniques that take way less time. I love that women have come a long way in being able to achieve these trends themselves!
