Bob + Paige stylist Mabuba Ayam shares her best celebrity hairstyles that work with any texture and for any occasion:
The Jenner-Kardashian women are known for changing up their colour, length and style from one Insta snap to the next. This summer, after a few weeks wearing a slick bob, Kylie debuted a long, wavy, platinum blonde look with a deep side part. What many people may not know is that her cool new ‘do is actually a wig! What makes the lace front wig so special and natural looking is that it’s made from human hair and has an invisible hairline. It can be styled curly or straight, and you can repeatedly change the colour.
For a good quality wig, expect to pay between $200 and $300. Top of the line ones will set you back $1000+. When you buy a wig, the person who sells it can help you style it. Basically you wear your own hair underneath in a small low, braided pony that’s pinned up flat to the scalp. Apply a hair net, then put the wig on top. Wigs aren’t for every one but they’re a great way to follow trends without damaging your own natural hair!
Balayage is a technique where colour is hand painted onto hair. Because the roots are darker you can go longer between touch ups. That means you only need to get your colour done twice a year making it very low maintenance and budget friendly! A lot of my clients love this look. It makes hair look thicker and fuller because there’s a lot of dimension, and it works on hair that’s wavy or straight hair, long or short. You can customize the look with any colour that suits your skin tone. Reds, brunettes, pastels, the options are endless. You can also go lighter in the summer and a little darker in the winter.
This is my favourite style for summer and my own go-to style! I like it because you can wear it when your hair is a little dirty, and it works with your natural texture. To get the look, apply a coin size amount of serum from root to ends. I like Tamefrizz De-Frizz Oil by KMS. Pull a section of hair from behind the ear, up to the crown. Next, give it some volume by teasing it a little bit underneath using a teasing brush or tail comb. Secure it with an elastic band then take a few strands and pull them towards your face for a slightly messier look. Finish with hairspray like StyleSign 3 Magic Finish Brilliance by Goldwell. I like it because it’s light and not too crispy!
This is a just-came-from-the-beach style that’s great because there’s no heat damage. To get this look apply Oribe Curl By Definition Crème to towel dried hair from roots to ends. Then, comb it back using a wide tooth comb so you’re keeping some texture. After that, using your fingers, scrunch hair from the ends up the shaft. For a shiny finish, apply a hair oil from roots to ends. I like Oribe’s Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil. Result? An effortless wet look that’s really sexy.
Celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin created this look for Chrissy. I love it because it really embraces your natural texture. After washing, apply a mousse like Goldwell Style Sign 4 Top Whip Ultra Strong Volume Mousse. Air dry with a diffuser until hair is completely dry. Then, using a flat iron or a big curling iron, curl medium sections around the face, leaving the ends a bit straight so you get a beachy look that’s not super curly. Finish with a texturizing spray like Hairplay Playable Texture by KMS. These kinds of waves can last a couple of days if you apply a dry shampoo. My favourite is Schwarzkopf’s Dust It Mattifying Powder.
The best thing about all these looks is that they pretty much work in any season!
